We are followers of Jesus Christ, learning from
him to
Open our HEARTS,
Open our MINDS, and
Open our DOORS to all of God’s people.
God’s desire for us is to be a community of HOSPITALITY and HEALING.
We open ourselves to God’s Holy Spirit, moving among us. We are committed to practicing deeds of love and service as Jesus taught. Christ, through the Holy Spirit, invites us to reach out in new ways to all of God’s children.
The Missions/Outreach group helps fund local mission projects such as meals at the Open Door Shelter in High Point and a Food Pantry that distributes food on a monthly basis. The Food Pantry serves from 20 to 30 families each month. Missions/Outreach also helps with projects within North Carolina, other states, and over seas.
We have begun a Helping Hands ministry. Helping Hands are persons who are willing to respond to requests for assistance with certain practical realities that people, for one reason or another, are unable to handle for themselves. We match the talents of our volunteers with the needs of our people to help both the giver and the receiver.
In the summer of 2007 we sent a mission worker to Zimbabwe in Africa who worked at a school and at the Fairfield Orphanage.
FUMC sent a mission building team to Birzai, Lithuania in July 2008. This was the fifth year for the team. In previous years, they have helped renovate a three story building by putting in decking, floors, interior walls and stairs. This was a former Soviet Army Recruiting Center and has become a church, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, and a soup kitchen. They performed renovation work on some of the homes in the Village areas, where families are living in the most meager homes and have no way of helping themselves. They installed running water and a water heater into a home with 7 children. This year, they remodeled a two story house and transformed it into the Gift of Grace Project. This will supply a place for children to get a meal each day, and provide a place for people without running water to get a shower and wash their clothes. It will eventually provide a shelter for abused women and their children. They hope to improve the quality of life for Lithuania's vulnerable populations through this humanitarian work.
Missions sponsors a Gifts of Grace Christmas Box ministry to the village children around Birzai, Lithuania. In 2005, there were 180 children in the villages and orphanage surprised by Christmas gifts. In 2006, the number was 240. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 the number had grown to more than 300. In December, three members of the Mission team travel to Lithuania to deliver the gifts.
Some of the fund raising events for this year include a Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale, Chili Cookoff, Fish Fry, Chicken Stew Luncheon, Super Salad Supper, and an "Old Fashioned" Country Breakfast.
